TestSeek's Expert Reviews Summary

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 is unique in the fact that it is heavier and larger than most other products in its range. Where most makers are trying to reduce the size of the camera and make it compact, the DMC TZ-25 goes exactly opposite to this trend. It has a measure of 103.3 x 59.3 x 36.5mm and a weight of 240 gms, making it almost double the normal compact camera weight.

The camera has a 9.1 megapixel resolution CCD sensor, a 4x digital zooming; it has a shutter speed of 1/2000 sec to 60 sec, face recognition software with self-timer, a 3inch TFT LCD display, and an automatic focal adjustment. In addition to all these, it has a 1280x720-pixel movie-capture quality, which is higher than most cameras. However, due to the large resolution and size, the camera does take more time in shots and between shots.

The editors liked

  • Movie-capture zoom ability
  • Good photo quality and resolution
  • 10x optical zoom
  • User friendly interface
  • Comfortable handgrip slot
  • 3 inch screen and high resolution
  • Wide lens with good quality
  • Excellent colour balance.

The editors didn't like

  • Microphone placing is not proper
  • Less detail in shots taken indoors
  • Low ISO capacity
  • Lower performance as compared to most others in its range.

TestSeek's Conclusion

The Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ5 is not entirely perfect, but does have most of its good points. The mega-zoom facility and the comfortable handling puts it among the top league of cameras in its range. All in all, the camera is a good buy if you overlook its bulk and low sensitivity.

  • While there are less expensive long-zoom consumer compacts on the market, they don't deliver the overall build quality and level of performance of the DMC-TZ5. The all-metal body, excellent Leica lens and host of features set this camera apart from the...

  • Abstract:  Back in April I reviewed the Lumix DMC-TZ4 , Panasonic's then-new 8.1-megapixel, 10x zoom travel camera, and I stated at the time that I also hoped to get its more powerful sibling the TZ5 in for review soon after. Well it's taken a little longer than I'd...

  • Attractive, functional design; generally above-average photo quality for its class; nice, useful feature set; lens can zoom during movie capture.
  • Aggressive smoothing reduces detail in indoor shots, even at low ISO sensitivities; modest performance; poorly placed microphone.
  • Though its not perfect, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5s compact midrange megazoom feature set puts it in a class with just its sibling, the TZ4, and should deliver a satisfying shooting experience. Specifications: Resolution: 9.1 megapixels; Optical zoo...

  • 10x Leica lens still great, Fast AF and good allaround speed, Vibrant color with plenty of punch, HD movie recording capabilities,
  • Noise reduction still too intrusive, Some weird screen bugs in bright shooting situations, Macro mode dodgy at times, No manual controls, Panasonic Lumix DMCTZ5
  • Journalists covering the digital camera industry seemed to be almost universally disappointed that Panasonic didn't, for the second update in a row, listen to their pleas to include more user exposure control on the next TZ camera. The TZ3 sold well, ...
