  • Crisp, bright optics, Useful focal length, Capable of blurred-background look, Angle of view useful on both FX and DX cameras, Nominal focus breathing

  • Compact and lightweight, Fairly fast f/2 aperture, Sharp and silent
  • No genuine lens hood available, No optical image stabilization, No auto/manual focus mode switch
  • The slimline benefit of a mirrorless camera is rather lost when you mount a big, hefty lens. By contrast, this compact and very lightweight prime is a perfect fit, bridging the gap between 35mm and 50mm focal lengths, combining a versatile viewing angle w...

  • Once the lens is in the right zone, it focuses quite quickly on close subjects, but if it's focussed a long way off, it can struggle, There's also a little focus breathing. It's not bad, but if you're shooting a subject that's moving towards or away from
  • No focus scale, Single control ring, AF struggles near the closest focus distance
  • At just under £249/$300 the Nikon Nikkor Z 40mm f/2 is a great-value lens. It has a couple of quirks but it generally produces very good quality images and it's a lovely size and weight. It's perfect for popping on your Nikon mirrorless camera when you're...

  • Small size, Image quality, Price, Autofocus speed, This lens gives me a lot of hope,
  • I wish Nikon improved their autofocus even more, The Nikon 40mm f2 Z is a pretty fantastic lens. In fact, it's the closest thing to being both a nifty 50 and a first 35mm lens. Nikon's move here was genuinely brilliant. On top of that, there's the weather

  • So far, I like the image quality from the Nikon 40mm f2 Z. I also adore how small it is. But I'll need to put a production unit through its rigors for a fuller test. Stay tuned for our full review to come...

  • Abstract:  Nikon's Nikkor Z 40mm f/2 is one of two lightweight, inexpensive prime lenses for the Z-mount - the other being the wider 28mm f/2.8.At 40mm, it's currently the closest match to the ‘nifty fifty' lenses of old, aiming to provide a lightweight lens with a...

  • Very decent image quality, Quick, quiet autofocus, Small and lightweight, Weather resistant construction
  • Reduced sharpness at close range, Pronounced vignetting wide open, Occasional autofocus failures, Slightly busy bokeh at f/2
  • I can be tempting to overlook inexpensive lenses like the Nikon Nikkor Z 40mm f/2 and assume that with its simpler optics and plastic mount, it wont be up to much. But in this case, that would be a huge mistake. Because while Nikon may have cut some cost...
