  • Abstract:  The underside of the JVC GZ-MG77 is worth a mention because the SD memory card slot is on the camcorder?s bottom face. It?s not an ideal location: it is out of sight, and it prevents swapping cards while the camcorder is not tripod-mounted. A greater l...

  • Drop detection worked well. Good video quality.
  • No viewfinder. Autofocus could be better. Mediocre night mode. Expensive.
  • Although not the best in its class and a bit overpriced, the JVC Everio GZ-MG77U is a good hard drive camcorder....

  • Abstract:  John Virata Personal camcorders have come a long way since the days of the miniDV cassette. While miniDV-based camcorders are as popular as ever, other competitive technologies are beginning to challenge the current king of the hill. On the professiona...

  • Supersmall and light; stores as much as 37 hours of video; easy and fast video transfer to your computer.
  • Subpar video quality; aspect-ratio issues with third-party programs when shooting wide-screen; no video light; no provisions for external microphone or accessories.
  • The small size and massive video storage capacity of the JVC Everio GZ-MG77 make it a tantalizing choice, but poor video quality keeps this hard-disk-based camera from being a tape- or DVD-killer.

  • Compact frame, easy to use, solid construction, storage space
  • Compression artefacts evident on rapid pans, ghosting, poor quality still images The Final Word The GZ-MG77 is an above average camcorder, but it’s let down on occasion by poor video quality.

  • Small scale; easy operation
  • Sluggish response during autofocus and autoexposure; poor quality footage
  • Although hard disk is inevitably the future for camcorders, the MG77 fails to delight. Casual enthusiasts who can put aside the problems with image quality and have little interest in editing might find that the small chassis is enough to convince. Mo...
