  • Beautiful HD picture. Records video files to SDHC memory card. Respectable battery life. Works with external mics.
  • No headphone jack to monitor audio. No accessory shoe for addons. Capturing footage is slow in iMovie. Storing video requires lots of hard drive space.
  • Panasonic’s HDC-SD1 captures great pictures, but using iMovie ’08 to capture and store the footage to your hard drive takes too long and can quickly fill up even monster-sized drives. You probably won’t mind these problems if you only ed...

  • Small, light, easy to use. Supersharp res, kickin' image stabilization.
  • Lowlight a tad grainy; slightly bluish video with auto white balance.

  • Generally high-quality video and decent stills; nice manual feature set.
  • Sluggish autofocus; poor automatic white balance; uncomfortable design with some poor feature implementations.
  • A solid SD-based camcorder, the Panasonic HDC-SD1 nevertheless suffers from a few performance issues and an annoying design.

  • The HDC-SD1 is a fantastic cutting edge piece of technology that finally does away with the need for tapes. It's small and light, delightfully easy to use and most of all takes superb high definition images. The AVCHD codec means that few editing applicat...

  • Compact Silent operation Manual control set
  • Noisy compression Editing solutions few and processor intensive Handling
  • On the runway this year, the Panasonic HDC-SD1 ($1299 MSRP) is turning heads. It’s small, sexy, and generates an appealing video image in bright light. The SD1 is also the first AVCHD camcorder to record directly onto bite-sized SDHC cards, and prov...

  • Smallest and lightest three-CCD HD camcorder currently available, records AVCHD to memory card, good array of manual controls, optical image stabilization
  • Disappointing battery life, limited editing options, included 4GB SDHC card holds only about 40 minutes of HD recordings
  • The smallest and lightest three-CCD HD camcorder currently available is the Panasonic HDC-SD1, a sleek and ultraportable device that records to SD or SDHC memory cards using the new AVCHD format. AVCHD records at 1,080i and 720p using the MPEG4 AVC vi...

  • Abstract:  The HDC-SD1 ($1299 MSRP) and HDC-DX1 camcorders from Panasonic mark the company’s first foray into consumer high definition video. They join a burgeoning niche of $1000 - $1300 HD camcorders. Unlike the DX1, which records to DVD, the HDC-SD1 is the...

  • Beautiful industrial design Takes high-def video with surround sound Compact and lightweight
  • Expensive No HDMI cable supplied No accessory shoe (hot or cold)
  • This camcorder is amazing. I’m not given to hyperbole but the HDC-SD1 is at the top of the pack for consumer camcorders circa early 2007. Given its size, design—and most important—the quality of its high-def video, anyone looking to be o...
