  • Abstract:  When Sony introduced the first high definition video camera a couple of years ago, it was 1080i rather than 720p. Actually, the format of this and most such video cameras is called HDV, which means 1,440x1,080i. It requires recording 1,555,200 pixels p...

  • Abstract:  The camcorder has 2 XLR balanced inputs with five switches within easy reach, allowing you multiple choices of audio recording. Remove the attached mic and jack, and you get clear, separate stereo recording from left and right side of the camcorders b...

  • Small, light, and easy to operate. Great picture quality for a one-chip camera. Doubles as a terrific digital still camera. Balanced XLR mic inputs.
  • Still no true progressive scan in a prosumer camera. Focus ring without stops. Poor low-light performance. Highly compressed HDV format.
  • A wonderful companion to the Sony Z1, especially when shooting in tight spaces or when being unobtrusive is essential. Ill admit it, I was a little disappointed when DV asked me to review the small-profile Sony HVR-A1 camera. With all the "tweener" H...

  • Superb pictures. The expanded focus idea. Low price for what you get.
  • Bottom loading mechanism and a bit front heavy. Position of record button and the sideways zoom control.
  • This is a good piece of kit either as a first camera for newbies or a spare for grizzled oldies. It?s brilliant for things like cars/boats and probably an exceptional travel camera. As a spare, you could also use it as a deck for digitising your stuff ...
