  • Abstract:  Particularly at ISO 200, the *ist D is capable of producing superlative image quality, with exceptional clarity, a wide tonal range, attractive skin tones, and great color fidelity. Resolution is high, about average for a 6-Mp SLR camera. Under close examination, my 8.5x11” ink jet prints are outstanding in all respects while 11x16.5” prints from TIFF or raw images are also impressive when viewed from a typical (greater) distance....

  • Abstract:  In a d-SLR field that\\\'s becoming increasingly crowded, the Pentax *ist D holds its own quite nicely. With \\\"street\\\" prices hovering around $1250 as of this writing in late March, 2004, it faces some very stiff competition from the less-expensive Canon Digital Rebel and the newly announced Nikon D70, but for anyone owning a complement of Pentax K-mount lenses, the *ist D is a camera that offers pretty much anything you might want from a d-SLR. I liked its color rendition, found its metering to generally be more accurate than most (albeit with a slight bias toward overexposure), and felt that a number of its user-interface and exposures were unusually well thought-out. It also has a very nice \\\"feel\\\" in the hand, with excellent build quality and a pleasant heft. - All in the most compact body of any d-SLR out there. Image noise up to about ISO 800 is also lower than average. On the down side, its images straight from the camera are rather soft, requirin...

  • Pentax has clearly left their earlier digital SLR false start behind them, the *ist D is a capable digital SLR which can stand shoulder to shoulder with the longer established names in the digital SLRs world without compromise. The cameras compact s...

  • Abstract:  Said to be the smallest, lightest digital SLR body yet, the oddly named Pentax *ist D (pronounced ist-dee) is a 6-megapixel camera with an 11-point AF sensor, a 16-segment multi-pattern metering system, and what the company calls a “Hyper” operating system with 22 user-adjustable functions. Although there are some restrictio...
